Challenge
In 2000, the Alexandria Governorate awarded Veolia Environmental Services the comprehensive management of its waste with a 15-year contract. In seeking to improve the waste management system, the Governorate aimed to highlight its image and improve its attractiveness.
In 2005, the Governorate extended the contract to the Port of Alexandria and Dekheila.
Objectives
- Increasing city cleanliness in order to improve living and health conditions for the residents of Alexandria.
- Raising environmental awareness among the population.
- Providing continuing education to local staff so as to ensure that high quality levels are achieved over the long term.
- Investing in recycling for agricultural purposes in response to increasing demand from farmers.

2006:"Habitat Scroll of Honour" prize awarded by UN-Habitat for exemplary practices in the field of waste collection and treatment.

A multiservices contract covering the entire chain of waste management activities
- Daily cleaning of roadways, beaches, monuments and parks.
- Daily collection of municipal waste.
- Collection and specialized handling of industrial and medical waste.
- Waste transfer: construction of three grouping centers.
- Waste recovery: construction of two landfill facilities that are among the most modern in Africa and the Middle East and compliant with environmental standards with the ability to reuse landfill gas.
- Composting: Three composting centers generate 600 metric tons of fertilizer per day, i.e. one of the largest volumes of compost produced in Egypt.
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions
Implementing a Clean Development Mechanism that aims to cut many millions of tons of CO2 equivalent during the period 2005-2015 (in accordance to the Kyoto protocol).
Raising waste management awareness
Environmental awareness campaigns run for Veolia's staff and in schools, sports clubs and public areas, in association with the Alexandria Governorate.
Offering continuing education for employees
Creation of the first permanent training center for waste management services specialties so as to develop local skills (more than 300 persons trained every month).
