Caring for the inclusion of disabled employees
Diversity is a central pillar of company recruitment policy, and Veolia Environnement has been bringing more disabled people into its workforce every year since 2004. Veolia Environmental Services Cleaning and Multiservices has been training its managers in disability management to promote the full inclusion of these new employees.
Who took this initiative?
The Veolia Environmental Services Cleaning and Multiservices HRD wanted to improve management awareness of the diversity of disability issues in the workplace.
Why
With disabled employees accounting for 7% of its workforce, Veolia Environmental Services Cleaning and Multiservices already exceeds national quotas, and plans to increase the number of such jobs in the years ahead.
This is why Veolia Environmental Services Cleaning and Multiservices is keen to prepare its managers to work with, and manage, these more vulnerable members of staff.
For whom
All Veolia Environmental Services Cleaning and Multiservices managers in every region of France.
Implementation
Specific training was provided for managers in all regions.
How
The aim of the training course was to explain disability, examine the problems it can create, introduce the inclusion support provided by the AGEFIPH (a French agency for promoting disabled workers) and demonstrate that these employees are especially well motivated and capable in the workplace.
Its purpose was to help managers adapt their approach to personnel management in ways that accommodate disability, with the ultimate aim of helping and promoting inclusion of disabled people in the workplace.
Outcome
In addition to raising awareness in the general sense, the training course has opened the way for providing an urgent response to the special situation of one employee who had been involved in an accident. In practice, this meant that following a meeting between a representative of the company employing the accident victim, Veolia Environmental Services Cleaning and Multiservices managers and an AGEFIPH representative, an ergonomist was able to recommend the purchase of the specialist equipment required to ensure that the employee concerned could continue to work as before.
Problems & solutions
The training course provided the information required to demystify disability and defuse the prejudice that is often attached to it. The managers concerned are now able to offer disabled people joining the company excellent working conditions and management specific to their individual needs.
Extending the initiative
The training course was offered in all Veolia Environmental Services Cleaning and Multiservices operating regions, and may now be extended to include all Veolia Environmental Services companies in France.
